Product Description
With the growth of film festivals, cable networks, specialty home video, and the Internet, there are more outlets and opportunities for screening short films now than at any time in the last 100 years. But before you can screen your short film, you need to shoot it. And before you can shoot it, you need to write it. The Short Screenplay provides both beginning and experienced screenwriters with all the guidance they need to write compelling, filmable short screenplays. Explore how to develop characters that an audience can identify with. How to create a narrative structure that fits a short time frame but still engages the audience. How to write dialogue that’s concise and memorable. How to develop story ideas from concept through final draft. All this and much more is covered in a unique conversational style that reads more like a novel than a “how-to” book. The book wraps up with a discussion of the role of the screenplay in the production process and with some helpful (and entertaining) sample scripts. This is the only guide you’ll ever need to make your short film a reality!

“Roberta Munroe is that rare person in the film world who can not only recognize an inspired, great film, but she can actually help you make one.”
–Mark Duplass, Sundance and SXSW award-winning filmmaker.

“Roberta Munroe is brilliant. Her advice and insights on our project, The Tribe, from rough cut to completed film were instrumental and invaluable to its success. It is exciting to think that all filmmakers will have access to her incredible mind and experience through this book.”
–Tiffany Shlain, award-winning filmmaker

Anyone can make a short film, right? Just grab some friends and your handheld and you can do it in a weekend or two before being accepted to a slew of film festivals, right?

Wrong.

Roberta Munroe screened short film submissions at Sundance for five years, and is an award-winning short filmmaker in her own right. So she knows a thing or two about how not to make a short film. From the first draft of your script to casting, production, editing, and distribution, this is your one-stop primer for breaking into the business. Featuring interviews with many of today’s most talented writers, producers, and directors, as well as revealing stories (e.g., what to do when the skinhead crack addict next door begins screaming obscenities as soon as you call “action”) from the sets of her own short films, Roberta walks you through the minefield of mistakes that an aspiring filmmaker can make–so that you don’t have to make them yourself.

Pixar’s unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the “Silly Symphonies” during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it’s only 90 seconds long, “Luxo, Jr.” (1986) ranks as the “Steamboat Willie” of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.) When the artists began work on Toy Story, they had learned so much from the shorts, they were ready to undertake that landmark creation. In the later shorts, the viewer can see the artists continuing to experiment: with a more realistic human figure in “Geri’s Game” and with new ways of suggesting atmospheric effects in “Boundin’.” Some of the more recent shorts continue the adventures of the characters from the features. “Jack-Jack Attack” reveals what happened to the hapless baby-sitter while the Incredibles were off fighting Syndrome, while “Mater and the Ghost Light” shows that life goes on for the inhabitants of Radiator Springs. When Sully from Monsters, Inc. tries to adjust his seat in “Mike’s New Car,” the animators prolong the moment to wring every drop of humor from the situation–just as an earlier generation of animators milked Wile E. Coyote’s antics for all they were worth. The long-unseen films for Sesame Street are an unexpected bonus. A delightful collection of entertaining shorts, and a significant chronicle of the growth of computer animation. (Rated G: suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) –Charles Solomon
